Lane Highbarger graduated from the University of Maryland in 1995 with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. His field of study was hydrogen bonding in the active site of enzymes; he modified the active site environment of acetoacetate decarboxylase to observe the effects of those changes on hydrogen bonding and enzymatic catalysis. He joined the FDA in January 1999 in the Office of Premarket Approval, which was later renamed the Office of Food Additive Safety. Currently, he works in the Division of Food Ingredients, where he acts as a Regulatory Review Scientist and Microbiology Review Scientist. Additionally, he is the office’s subject matter expert for food irradiation, nitrites and nitrates, and modified atmosphere packaging for meats.
